Vango Sleeping Bags - Technical Information

A comfortable night's sleep is essential to your level of performance during the day and so even more important is the ability of the sleeping bag to keep you warm when your body is at rest. Vangos range of sleeping bags are designed to provide different levels of performance depending on your needs.

Performance is measured by how well the bag maintains insulation, which in turn depends on the design, filling and construction. At Vango they have learned how to combine these factors in a way that maximises performance so that whichever category of bag you choose, you can be sure of its ability to keep you warm.

Lifetime Guarantee

Vango has spent the last 4 decades testing and developing innovative tent designs and fabrics to meet the demands of mountaineers, climbers, trekkers and camping enthusiasts alike. As part of their commitment, they offer the Vango Lifetime Guarantee on all of their tents. All Vango products are designed and manufactured to exacting standards and are guaranteed to be suitable for the end purpose intended. As part of our ongoing commitment

we will guarantee for the lifetime of the product, that should this product fail during normal usage as a result of a component, material or manufacturing fault, excluding fair wear and tear (which includes colour fading), then the product will be repaired or replaced at our expense and discretion. This guarantee is only valid when products are used for recreational purposes, which do not include commercial usage, ie hiring, use by outdoor centres, etc.

Repairs to damage caused by accident, improper care, use in inappropriate conditions or normal wear and tear will be carried out where possible at a reasonable charge. Please ensure that all products are clean and dry prior to being returned, as failure to do so may result in the product being returned to you uninspected, which may in turn impact upon any warranty claim.

No consequential loss may be claimed under this guarantee. This guarantee in no way affects your statutory rights. If you think your product is faulty then you should first contact the stockist from whom the product was purchased. They should then consult with us, if necessary, to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.

Testing

In order to provide a realistic indication of the temperature range at which a camper will feel comfortable whilst using a Vango sleeping bag, thay have tested the insulative properties of most of their sleeping bags at the Institut Francais Textile-Habillement (IFTH) in accordance with EN13537:2002.

The standard requires a Humanoid Thermal Mannequin, which is internally heated to a constant temperature representative of an adult body keeping a constant surface temperature at all times, to be placed inside the sleeping bag in controlled conditions. The Mannequin has 35 individually heated segments which are monitored independently to replicate the differing temperature variances of head, toes, arms etc. From this information the extreme and comfort performances of the sleeping bags can be calculated.

These temperature ratings are as accurate as scientific measurements can be, given that everyone has differing metabolic rates and can generate and hold heat at different levels. These can vary dependent on your state of health, what and when you last ate, and a multitude of other factors, such as how humid it is and how sheltered you are from the wind.

Hence these temperature ratings are only a guide. When choosing a sleeping bag it is the comfort temperature range that is the most important criteria to consider. We would suggest that if you expect temperatures close to the lower limit of the comfort temperature listed for a sleeping bag that you consider moving up the range to the next warmest model, just in case you meet unexpected conditions, or you are ill etc.

There are some sizes of sleeping bag that are not covered by this standard (e.g. junior bags and double sleeping bags). In these cases, the results of similar sleeping bags have been interpreted to provide recommendations.

Technical Fabrics

All our fabrics are developed or selected to suit the intended sleeping bag use. Lightweight fabrics are ideal for bags which need to be light and easily transported, whilst bags which need to endure the rough treatment given out by kids, for example, need to be tougher and by their very nature are heavier. That's why Vango have such a wide selection of Polair fabrics. Every one of their outer shell fabrics is windproof, tear resistant, non-absorbent and quick drying, each having been developed to be fibreproof.

The linings or inner fabrics are used to create the warmest and cosiest environment but still contribute to the lightweight aspect of the bag.

Constructions

SINGLE LAYER CONSTRUCTION
Single layer, stitched through construction, used in the Wilderness, Ultralite Voyager and Venom.

OFF-SET DOUBLE-LAYER CONSTRUCTION
Two layers of filling separated with two layers of scrim to keep the fill sliding rather than snagging or lumping. Used in Nitestar, Orion and Astral.

ASC2/ASC3 - ADVANCED SHINGLE CONSTRUCTION
Double/Triple Layer - Advanced Shingle Construction utilises a double/triple strata of overlapping layers in combination with some of the most advanced synthetic materials available to create a thermal system which retains generated heat more effectively. ASC2 is used in Ultralite ASC. ASC3 is used in Summit ASC.

ATC - ADVANCED TRAPEZIODAL CONSTRUCTION
Angled chevron baffles prevents down from shifting and increases thermal efficiency by slowing heat loss compared to similar rectangular shaped baffles. Used on the Vipers.

Insulations

INSULITE SUPERFINE
Insulite Superfine insulation is a blend of carefully selected fibres, which combine to produce a filling that has excellent loft characteristics, is highly compressible and extremely durable. The fibres are ideal for use in the new advanced shingle construction providing great warmth to weight ratios.

INSULITE SPIRALISED
A specially developed filling by Vango, it traps more air to provide up to 20% more warmth than solid fibre insulation. Through their hollow, siliconised and spiralled fibres it retains insulative quality even when wet, is easy care, durable, machine washable and non-allergenic. It maintains shape and insulative qualities even after repeated cleaning.

GOOSE DOWN
Goose down is the highest performing insulation - highest loft v's weight. Vango use it in their Venom range of bags. The high quality Goose Down used in the lightweight sleeping bags has a 600+ fill power rating (fill power of the down is the ability to loft after compression). The quality of this down is measured by the percentage of down v's feather. Vango use down with a ratio of 90/10. That is 90% high quality white goose down to 10% feather.

Fabrics

POLAIR MICRO RSP
Polair Micro RSP (40 Denier, 316T Micro-ripstop Polyester) is highly wind resistant and downproof making it an ideal choice for our lightweight Down sleeping bag range. Its low weight and soft handle allows excellent fabric draping resulting in a maximum loft of the high quality down filling. The greater the loft, the higher the insulation.

POLAIR MICRO
Polair Micro (50 Denier, 310T Tactel Nylon) is highly wind resistant and downproof making it an ideal choice for Vangos lightweight Down sleeping bag range. Its low weight and soft handle allows excellent fabric draping resulting in a maximum loft of the high quality down filling. The greater the loft, the higher the insulation.

POLAIR MICRO
A lightweight ripstop nylon (40 Denier, 240T Nylon Ripstop) which has been developed for its fibre proofness and durability.

POLAIR RSP
Polair RSP (70 Denier, 210T Micro-ripstop Polyester) is a light, strong and highly breathable polyester ripstop.

POLAIR
A plain weave (70 Denier, 190T) nylon that is highly durable and perfectly suited to Vangos entry level collection. Polair was the original nylon fabric used in Vango Sleeping Bags before fabric technology took hold and produced some of the more advanced fabrics that they use in their high quality sleeping bags. Polair was good enough then and it continues to out perform its expectations.

POLAIR SILKY
Polair Silky fabric is the first choice of fabric when lining a sleeping bag. It offers both insulative properties and wicking properties without sacrificing breathability. The result of this is an extremely comfortable liner that allows body moisture to pass through the lining to the outside where it can disperse and evaporate.

POLAIR TC
Polair TC (Terylene Cotton) is a poly cotton lining that is familiar to everyone who uses cotton sheeting. It is ideal for Vangos entry level products where comfort, warmth and ease of washing are the main factors to consider.

BRUSHED FLANNEL
Used on Astral and Orion sleeping bags, the 30 x 60 Cotton is lightly brushed making it ideal for products where comfort, warmth and ease of washing are the main factors to consider.
